St Herbert's RC Primary School

Class 2

Welcome to Class 2!

Our class consists of Year 1 children who are all amazing, enthusiastic learners, and who love to learn in lots of different ways.

Parents/carers will be able to follow their children's progress throughout the school year.  Please follow our school Twitter feed which shows the brilliant work/activities we will be doing.  The Twitter feed contains images and videos of work created by the students and teacher updates.

Please find a copy of the newsletter below for Class 2 with key information, such as reading days, snacks, topics and homework etc.

As a school we use the ReadWriteInc scheme to teach Phonics, which is taught every morning. We go into different groups for phonics, to help us with the sounds we need to learn next. We use the White Rose programme to teach Mathematics, and follow the national curriculum objectives for Year 1 through this scheme.

Each half term our learning is focused on a particular foundation subject e.g. Science, History or Geography, with all other subjects taught and reviewed to enhance our learning.

Please see the grid below to see what we will be learning each half term.

Your child has a certain reading day that will have been sent home at the beginning of the year. Please ensure that they bring the book bag in on this day so that they can be heard reading, and their book can be changed. Please read with your child every day for a minimum of 5 or 10 minutes to help with their fluency and understanding.

Phonics Screening

The Year 1 children will complete a Phonics Screening check which is completed nationally throughout England.  The screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England and is usually taken in June. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your children are progressing in phonics.  It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.

The test contains 40 words, each child will sit one-to-one with a teacher and read each word aloud. The test is a combination of 20 real words and 20 pseudo words (nonsense words). The results will be given to parents at the end of the Summer term stating if they have passed or not. If the child does pass, they will retake the test in Year 2. Year 1 parents will be invited to attend a parents meeting during the Spring term which will explain the Phonic Screening check in more detail.

Homework links/Explanation

Homework is set every Friday via Google Classroom and should be returned by the following Friday (on Google Classroom). Homework is based on the focus for that half-term, and contains different activities and ideas to help enhance your child’s learning in school.

Spellings will also be sent home each Friday. They should be practiced every day and your child can also access them on our spelling platform Spelling Shed. Please encourage your child to practice the spellings as much as possible as it is an important part of the Year 1 curriculum.
